This is a message explaining the problem with Ventrillo for Mac users such as myself (Stronour). It is my hope that the problem will be dealt with and fixed so that I will be able to raid with Vent and make it easier on the Raid leaders, who already have enough on their plate (no pun intended, Pally's).

The Mac client that I downloaded has the same set up and look as the PC version. Most of the features are the same. The problem that I run into, is when I log into the CoD channel. After I get the "Welcome" message and close the window, I have an error message list pop up.

Full message:
Failed to get encoder for specified Codec.
This client platform currently supports only the Speex codec. The server and/or channel is configured to use the 'GSM 6.10' codec.

After looking though the FAQs on the Vent website, it seems that at this time there is no GSM 6.10 codec for Mac. However, the solution is that the server settings would have to be changed to use the Speex codec. From what I have read, PCs can use either without a problem.

Basically, the one who can change the server settings would have to switch them to the Speex codec in order for a Mac user, such as myself, to have the advantages of utilizing Vent in a Raid. Now that would be the easiest solution to the problem I have been having. The only problem is that I am not sure if the sound quality changes or not. I assume it wouldn't, and if it did, the difference wouldn't be significant. CoD could test this out, just to see what the difference is.

Of course, if the settings were changed on the server, and adjusted by all clients (which is very simple), and there is a problem with the sound quality, or any other difficulties whatsoever, then it will be tough shit for me. I would very much like to gain the advantages of a program like Vent, but if it comes at the price of lesser quality for the others in the guild, then I will just have to find an alternative method.

I hope this gives everyone an insight to the frustration that I go through for having this problem with Vent. But I would much rather ease the frustration of the Raid Leaders to have to pretty much babysit a fellow raider. Hopefully if we try this and it works well, it will ease a whole lot stress from everyones shoulders.

Stronour is full of nonsense. I refuse to listen to him on the unfounded principle that he is a total noob.

If only it were that simple.

This was attempted one other time several months ago, for the same reason, one person with a Mac.  By the end of the day the Ventrilo server did not work for anyone at all.  Switching it back to the original codec did not bring it back up.  My memory fades with age but, as I recall, it was a day or two later before the powers that be got it working again using the current codec.

So, not really that simple.

Is there a Teamspeak client for the Mac?

Try getting that.  I have a personal Teamspeak server.  Maybe we can move over to that for your run.

When I get back, I'll look into my vent service and see what the suggestions are for Mac users.  Thanks for all the input.  Hopefully, we can get something together so we can work this out.
